Starting on Thursday, October 12, we will be starting Speedy Selbu Mittens by Skeindeer Knits!
Selbu is a very traditional eight-petal rose known by the majority of Norwegians as the “Selbu Rose.” Selbu is also an idyllic town steeped in the tradition of knit Selbu Mittens. It is located an hour south-east of Trondheim in the Trøndelag region of Norway.
The town has a home crafts heritage centre, called Selbu Husflidscentral, which is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of local crafts, knowledge, and traditions, with a special focus on double stranded knitting, the technique used to craft the famous Selbu mittens. The Selbu mitten pattern dates back to the 1800s, and was originally designed by a young woman named Marit Guldsetbru Emstad.
The Speedy Selbu Mittens are knit in aran weight yarn & are ideal for those new to colorwork mittens, as the pattern includes written row-by-row instructions. They are knit in the round & will keep hands extremely warm!
Here is what you will need for your Norwegian knitting journey:
Materials:
- 1 ball each of a true aran weight, heritage yarn such as Sandnes Garn Fritidsgarn, Jamieson’s Shetland Heather Aran or Rauma Vamsegarn in high contrast colors
- Size US 6 double point needles (or preferred method of small circumference knitting)
- Size US 10 double point needles (or preferred method of small circumference knitting)
- *Please note, needles may need to vary based on your gauge
