This week we are excited to introduce knitwear designer Emily O’Brien. Our feature pattern this week is one of her newest designs, the Apiculture Hat. This adorable stranded colorwork hat is knit with Brooklyn Tweed Peerie, a soft, smooth fingering weight yarn spun from 100% American Merino Wool. Perfect for colorwork, Peerie has wonderful stitch definition.
Emily O’Brien has been knitting since she was 12 years old. She went to school for theatre design but ended up putting those design skills into knitwear instead! Her focus is on creating patterns that are not just beautiful, but also really fun and addicting to knit.
Inspired by architectural details, things that are cute, and beautiful yarns playing together, she has been featured in Knit Picks Collections, I Like Knitting, Knit Now, and has popular self-published patterns on Ravelry.
Emily lives in Louisville, KY with her husband Chad & a menagerie of 1 dog (Buttercup), 3 cats (Ash, Albus, and Porch Cat), 1 rabbit (Oswald), and about 20,000 honeybees. Aside from yarn, Emily loves both kitties and cupcakes.
To knit the Apiculture Hat, you will need 1 skein each of two colors of Brooklyn Tweed Peerie, as well as size US 3, 16” circular needles & double point needles (or size required to achieve gauge).
The pattern is charted & includes the following sizes:
Toddler (Adult Small, Adult Large)
Fits Head Circumference:
18-19” (22-23”, 24-25”)
